Since 2005 Birute Tumiene has been a member of the Society for Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism, SSIEM, and since 2006 she is one of the founders and a board member of the Baltic Society of Inherited Metabolic Diseases (Baltic Metabolic Group).

She is also a co - chair of the Board of Member States at the European Commission and is very involved in the European Reference Networks. She talked about the European Joint program for Rare Diseases at the meeting of ERN Ithaca in Goteborg.
